Emergency Care for Braces & Orthodontic Appliances

While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, it’s important to know what to do if something unexpected happens during your treatment. At Solitaire Orthodontics, Drs. Piyush and Kiran Heda are here to guide you through any situation, from a poking wire to a direct dental injury. Knowing the right steps can help ease discomfort and prevent delays in your treatment.

Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

Sometimes braces or appliances can become bent, broken, or loose. While these situations are usually not serious, they can be uncomfortable. Here are a few quick fixes you can try at home until we see you in the office:

  • Irritating tie wire → Cover it with orthodontic wax (or beeswax) or gently tuck it under the archwire with a pencil eraser or Q-tip.

  • Loose band or bracket → Leave it in place and call us during patient hours so we can schedule a repair if needed.

  • Broken or poking wire → Try carefully bending it in with a pencil eraser or trimming the end with sterilized nail clippers. Then call our office if the issue persists.

Please remember: For your convenience (and that of other patients), we cannot accept walk-ins for emergencies. Always call ahead so we can prepare for your visit.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If you experience a direct blow to the mouth, whether you’re in braces or not, take these steps right away:

  1. Apply ice to reduce swelling.

  2. Contact your general dentist immediately, especially if a tooth has been fractured, displaced, or knocked out. X-rays may be needed.

  3. Once your dentist has addressed the injury, call us. If your braces or appliances were damaged or displaced, we’ll adjust or repair them as soon as possible.

Tip: Always wear a mouthguard during contact sports to lower your risk of injury.

After Office Hours

If an orthodontic emergency arises after hours and you are in pain, please call our office. Our voicemail or emergency line will provide instructions on who to contact for assistance.

With the right steps, most orthodontic emergencies can be managed until we see you. If you’re ever unsure, call us; we’re here to help keep your treatment safe and on track.
